Training on Spinning Yarn from Brown Cotton Fibre
From September 19–26, 2026, the Kampung Gazebo Baduy Community took part in a week-long training in Tuban on spinning yarn from brown and white cotton fibres, led by Mrs. Uswatun Hasanah, founder of Sekar Ayu Wilujeng—a brand with a long-standing family tradition of cultivating kapas lowo (brown cotton) and white cotton.
Over the course of nearly one week, the training covered several stages of traditional cotton processing, including:
- Separating cotton fibres from the seeds
- Spinning white and brown cotton
- Nglikasi — the process of winding yarn onto a traditional likasan tool while counting the number of threads
- Boiling the yarn
- Applying starch and brushing the cotton fibres
This activity was made possible through the support and funding of Rumah Rakuji, as part of its ongoing efforts to support local communities and the custodians of Indonesia’s textile heritage and traditional knowledge.
Warlami will continue to encourage and support cultural knowledge keepers and local communities, including the Kampung Gazebo Baduy Community, led by Kang Arsid together with its women weavers, as well as Mrs. Uswatun Hasanah. Through continued learning and practice, they are keeping the knowledge of cotton fibres alive and exploring their applications in naturally dyed Indonesian textiles—while considering ecological values and local wisdom for the continued development of Indonesia’s textile heritage.
