BEMBAN - Dayak Iban

Bemban (Donax canniformis) is a material used for plaiting by Dayak Iban Tribe. This clutch is plaited by the Dayak Ibans in the Kenasau Hamlet, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The weaving pattern of 1 mm thickness creates impressive that is delicate, intricate and exquisite pattern. For its women member, plaiting is culturally significant, as with tattoos for its men. Those unable to plait will be ashamed and difficult in finding partner. Dayak Iban tribe believe that Bemban can protect themselves from foul spirits and enlighten them towards invulnerability. It is believed that those who attained invulnerability are susceptible to Bemban. That is the reason why Bemban must never be used to hit spirits and human. Along with our aim in sustainability especially on  SDGS 2030 number 5 (Gender Equality) and 12 (Responsible Consumption & Production), there has been training and development to create ready-to-wear products, from plaiting mats into fashionable clutch with the aim of increasing market demand and improving the weavers’ standard of living.
